Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Tassadiq Hussain Jillani said on Saturday that judiciary would play its due role if judicial freedom is threatened.

He was addressing the media at the District Bar Association office here.

CJ Jillani said that supremacy of the law and constitution would not be compromised. He urged lawyers to keep in mind basic principles such as supremacy of constitution, rule of law, provision of justice and struggle against corruption. “The bench would fulfill its oath if the freedom of judiciary is jeopardised,” he added.

The CJ said that he wanted to transform society to one where everyone would have easy access to justice. He said his job as a judge is not a “bed of roses” as judges are accountable.

The chief justice urged the lawyers to work hard and lauded the role of lawyers, civil society and the media for restoration of an independent judiciary.
