Senator Mushahidullah Khan said a segment of media does not want to see the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government successful, adding that the closure of Geo TV will not be the right act.

Speaking in the Senate on Friday, he said every institution, particularly the Army, has rendered sacrifices for the country, adding that all the institutions should also hold themselves accountable if they want to take the country forward.

He stated that at least 30, 000 soldiers embraced martyrdom at Siachen due to the mistake of former president Pervez Musharraf but no one questioned about it.

He claimed that everything against the government in the media, Bani Gala or Lal Haveli is being done by supporters of Musharraf.

The senator acknowledged Geo’s mistake but said that it should not be shut down, adding that the channel should be penalised as per the law.

Senator Rubina Irfan condemned the attack on journalist Hamid Mir. Senator Sardar said the government is responsible for the on-going crisis. He was of the opinion that the government should have intervened when the crisis developed among the institutions.

He said the government should now make efforts to ease tensions and resolve the issue on merit.

Federal Minister for States and Frontier Region Abdul Qadir Baloch urged all political parties and the media to play their role for national security and further strengthening of democracy in the country.

Winding up the debate on a motion regarding the latest political situation, he said no political party wants derailment of democracy in the country. It is the responsibility of political parties to come forward and defend democracy against those who enter the corridors of power through backdoors.

On the issue of a private channel, the minister said that the government is in a position to amicably solve the problem after announcement of verdicts by the judiciary in this regard.

The House, which met with Senator Nayyar Hussain Bukhari in the chair, discussed a wide range of issues before being prorogued for an indefinite period.
