A Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) faction has claimed responsibility for kidnapping a Chinese tourist from Draban area of Dera Ismail Khan

Abdullah Bahar, a commander of the militant outfit, called media correspondents in DI Khan and Tank on Tuesday, confirming that the outfit had abducted Chinese national Dong Zhong.

DI Khan District Police Officer (DPO) Sadiq Baluch told Pakistan Today that the 26-year-old Chinese national had entered Pakistan from India on April 17, 2014 at Wahga border, adding that “there is no further information about his next destination in Pakistan or abroad”.

The officer said that the police had received reports regarding the abduction of a Chinese engineer by two motorcyclists. After a four-hour-long search, the policemen returned with the belongings of the Chinese national.

“We have abducted the Chinese national to build up pressure against the government to release our men,” said Abdullah.

Abdullah is leading a group called “Toora Shpa”, involved in abductions. The purpose of these abductions is to make the government concede to the demands of the militants and to get ransom to address financial and logistic needs of the militants.

Previously, militants headed by Abdullah Mehsud, abducted two Chinese engineers working on Gomal Zam Dam project in October 2004. One of them was killed in a military action whereas the other was rescued. In 2006, several Chinese nationals were killed by militants in Peshawar.
