The Government has issued SRO 351(I)/2014 granting additional powers to the officers of Directorate General of Intelligence & Investigation (Inland Revenue) to ensure that the cases initiated by the agency are brought to a conclusion and revenue is collected and deposited in real time. It would not be out of place to mention here, that a majority of the powers mentioned in the SRO already existed with the Directorate General. Only a few powers have been added so that cases initiated are finalized as well. The backdrop to vesting additional powers with Directorate General of Intelligence & Investigation (IR) was the realization on part of the Senior Management at FBR, that investigation reports sent to the field formations were not getting the attention they merited. Moreover, this duplication of work made it inconvenient for the taxpayers to appear at different fora for finalization of their cases.
