Mai Fatima and her husband Mir Muhammad, residents of Ghotki had gone to India in January to meet Fatima’s aging father. Their visa was originally for one-and-a-half month, but was later extended by another month when Fatima’s father suddenly passed away. Fatima had been seven months pregnant when she had reached India and on April 14 she gave birth to a baby boy at a private hospital.

When the couple along with the newborn reached the Munabao railway station to leave for Pakistan via the Thar Express, they were stopped by the immigration officers who asked them to get the relevant documents (passport or visa) from the Pakistani High Commission in India.

The authorities asked the couple to either “go back to Pakistan leaving the child behind, or complete the documentation of their baby” before departure from India.
