China Mobile to invest $ 1b in Pakistan

China Mobile Communications Corporation Executive Vice President Li Zhengmao along with his team called on Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar at the finance ministry Thursday.

Zhengmao congratulated the finance minister and the minister of state for IT for holding successful spectrum auction in a transparent manner. He said his corporation would invest over US$ 1 billion in telecommunication infrastructure and training of its officials within a period of three years. While reiterating his commitment to expand investment in Pakistan, Zhengmao disclosed that he planned to roll out projects in e-education and e-health. He added that a framework agreement for future investment and R&D projects with the government of Pakistan will be formally signed for further commitments.

Minister of State for IT Anusha Rehman, who was also present in the meeting, requested production of mobile sets in Pakistan which would help the local industry in technology development. She said the company’s aim should be for localised research and development with transfer of technology which will ultimately benefit their local industry.

She emphasized that the China Mobile Communications Corporation should initiate local based product manufacturing projects which will help in employment generation. The executive vice president said they would seriously consider the proposal.
