Deceased legendary Indian writer Khushwant Singh was reunited with his birthplace Hadali, 12km from Khusab by friend and renowned Pakistani writer Fakir Syed Aijazuddin.
Singh was Born in 1915 in Hadali, Punjab and later migrated to India after partition.
He passed away on March 20 this year.
Aijazuddin brought Singh’s ashes from India and placed them in a wall of his school in Hadali in a simple ceremony on Tuesday. A marble tablet was then placed on the wall, to preserve the ashes.
The tablet read, “In memory of Sardar Khushwant Singh – 1915- 2014- A Sikh, a scholar and a son of Hadali (Punjab)”;
“This is where my roots are. I have nourished them with tears of nostalgia.”
The attendants of the ceremony included the headmaster and teachers of the school who had met Singh on his visit to Hadali in 1987.
It was reported earlier by media that a fistful of his ashes had been saved by his family in order to be taken back his Pakistani friend and placed in the soil where he was born.
Talking to a media outlet at the event, Aijazzudin said, “When I met Khushwant Singh in Delhi on March 4 this year he expressed a wish to be buried in Hadali. His family agreed to make available a fistful of ashes which I then brought to Pakistan.”
A person who wish to be buried at that place where, “This is where my roots are. I have nourished them with tears of nostalgia.” proves how he passed his 99 yrs with discomfort in a foreign land.
