ISLAMABAD – Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Syed Munawar Hassan on Sunday asked the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to convene a summit on the issue of desecration of Holy Quran and Namoos-e-Risalat in the backdrop of incident of burning a copy of Holy Quran by a US pastor.
Addressing a rally at the Blue Area in Islamabad, the JI chief also urged the government to convene an All Parties Conference on the issue. He condemned in the strongest term the incident of burning the Holy Quran by a pastor in Florida and demanded the government to summon the US ambassador in Pakistan to the Foreign Office to register protest against the incident.
The JI leader came hard on Interior Minister Rehman Malik, saying he was representing the US and India instead his own country.
He also criticised the government for release of the US national involved in the murder of two Pakistanis. He was of the view that central and Punjab government failed to represent the sentiments of the people of Pakistan. Munawar observed that the US was pressing the government to launch military operation in North Waziristan just to pave the way for operation in south Punjab.
He demanded the government to stop military operation in Balochistan adding it should sit on dialogue table with all the warring factions. Earlier led by Munawar Hassan, hundreds of JI workers holding placards and banners inscribed with anti-US slogans marched from Khyber Plaza towards the Parliament House to condemn the US pastor’s act and role of Pakistani authorities in the release of Raymond Davis.
They were chanting slogans ‘down with US’ and demanded the Pakistani rulers to safeguard the sovereignty of the country.
