LHC CJ says lawyers services to be remembered for long
Services of lawyers community will be remembered for a long, long time, said Lahore High Court Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial while addressing a seminar titled “Court Reporting and Dispensation of Justice” organised at the PunjabJudicialAcademy by the Press Council of Pakistan (PCP) on Saturday.
He said that Pakistan was created by an advocate, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, whereas its vision was given by another advocate, Allama Muhammad Iqbal and yet a number of other lawyers leaders of Pakistan Movement had struggled for this homeland.
He recalled that the Lawyers Movement of 2007 was unique in a sense that not a leaf tree was broken or public property damaged as the movement was purely based on dialogue, the most trusted weapon of the advocates.
He further said that the judges cannot decide cases without assistance from the legal fraternity and the role of advocates in the dispensation of justice cannot be undermined. He hoped that in future too the judiciary, lawyers, civil society and media would jointly ensure the supremacy of the rule of law in the country.
The chief justice said that the role of media was very important for the rule of law in the country and restoration of constitutional rights of the public.
The court reporters should also take extra care while reporting judicial matters so that their news may not prejudice the court proceedings, he added.
The chief justice lauded the role of court reporting in the Lahore High Court.
Speaking on the occasion, PCP Chairman Raja Shafqat Abbasi said that era of press release was over and now media was an independent entity and it should remain independent.
He said that if there were some weaknesses than the media should review itself and official media bodies should play their role for the purpose.
He said that the Pakistani media is better than other regional media. He said that Pakistani media played a vital role for democracy, due to which it became fourth pillar.
Pakistan Bar Council Vice Chairman Mujeebur Rehman Shami and and CPNE President Saeed Aasi also spoke on the occasion.
Later, the LHC CJ gave away certificates to the court reporters while Press Council of Pakistan chairman presented a shield to the chief justice.
