SC rejects recommendation for issuance of arms license to lawyers

Supreme Court (SC) has rejected lawyers’ organisations recommendations on issuance of arms licenses to lawyers and others.

A 3-mmeber SC bench presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Tassaduq Hussain Jillani took up Kutchery attack case for hearing Wednesday.

President Bar Association Mohsin Kiani presented the recommendations before the court and said arms licenses be issued to lawyers.

The court observed, “Lawyers’ licenses is their weapon, permission like this cannot be accorded.”

Mohsin Kiani said, “Facilities for free medical treatment be provided to the legal fraternity.”

Justice Azmat Saeed remarked, “The lawyers’ organizations should arrange health insurance for the lawyers rather than constructing grand buildings out of fund. Health related problems will stand resolved automatically.”

The bar association president recommended that Islamabad police has shown sheer negligence during attack on Islamabad district courts, therefore, stern action be initiated against the persons found responsible and cases be registered against them.

The court remarked, “Police is conducting investigation in respect of their men on its own. Let them do their job.”

The bar president further recommended that subordinate judiciary be transferred to other provinces unless proper security arrangements are put in place in Islamabad Kutchery.

The CJP remarked, “Approach Islamabad High Court in this connection. This is not our domain.”

The court directed bar president to review his recommendations afresh, work out them again and present them before it till April, 16. Reply will also be sought from interior secretary.

The hearing of the case was adjourned till April, 16.
