Commuters on the Islamabad Expressway cannot skip the eye-soaring sight of heaps of garbage and trash, dumped near bank of Korang Nullah, right in front of a cluster of private housing societies.
Despite a clear warning sign by the Capital Development Authority of strict action against trash-dumpers, the elements oblivious to the environmental impacts of such practice, apparently defy the stricture by throwing nasty solid material on the roadside.
A stinky smell, usually hovers all over the place due to rusting of leftovers. It was also observed that the trash scavengers trying to grab most of their spoils, scatter the odious heaps, which now spread over a large area from the nearby craggy boulder to the Korang Nullah bridge.
A large volume of the garbage heaps also fell into the waters of Korang Nullah, gliding a few dozen of meters below the roadside, adding to further water contamination. The dwellers residing nearby were of the opinion that the worst could be the setting ablaze heaps of garbage with billowing of harmful clouds of smoke, containing health hazardous gases.
An official maintained that the civic body was vigilant in coping with such unhygienic practices and taking action above board against violators.
Hashmat Ali Habib, a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court known for his various public-interest litigation, commented that the practice of dumping harmful materials in fresh water reservoirs, nullahs and lakes was violation of the apex Court’s verdicts especially in suo motu taken cases of Rawal Lake and Manchar Lake pollution.
