Rotary Peace and Goodwill Conference held in Lahore

LAHORE – Former Supreme Court Bar Association president Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan has said that the contributions by the Rotary International are exemplary and Pakistan is fortunate that organisations such as the Rotary International are working in the country.
He was addressing Rotary Peace and Goodwill Conference at a local hotel on Saturday. Appreciating Rotary’s role in flood relief, Aitzaz hoped that the organisation would continue its good work. Rotary District Governor Shehzad Ahmed, who observed that the media and the judiciary were free today and it was a positive sign for the country, inaugurated the conference attended by foreign delegates from the US, Germany, Canada, India, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
PDG Don Gatzke (US), Rachel William (US), Lon Penna (US), DG Rick Mangonello (US), Klaus Klennert were among the speakers. Outstanding clubs of the Rotary were rewarded with shields during the three-day conference, which will conclude today.
Addressing the gathering, former Foreign Affairs minister Khurshid Kasuri talked about Pakistan’s role in promoting peace and goodwill, and said that terrorist attack in the US on September 11, 2001 and its aftermath in terms of the American policies directly impacted South Asia.
He said that with the (then US president George W) Bush administration embarking upon its war on terror, greater attention was given to the South West Asia and the government in Pakistan, to avoid international isolation, decided to join the coalition against terrorism.
