Extremists have hijacked Islam: OIC SG

Extremist voices and groups have hijacked Islam and misappropriated the right to speak on its behalf, according to Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Secretary General Iyad Ameen Madani.

In his address at the inaugural session of the 25th session of the Arab Summit held in Kuwait, he stressed that in actual fact, Islam with its established values and aspirations and with its advocacy of justice, equality, concord, coexistence and mutuality, is totally unrelated to them and to their ideologies and what they call for.

Madani said that the relations between the OIC and the League of Arab States are of a fundamental and pivotal character, with the cause of Palestine, al-Aqsa Mosque and al-Quds at the forefront, particularly under the recurrent and systematic Israeli violations aimed at judaising al-Quds and the stifling and brutal constraints meted upon the Jerusalamities.

He paid tribute to the close cooperative and consultative relations between the two organizations in their stand in the face of their common issues and challenges, and underlined the OIC’s keen interest in furthering its coordination with the Arab League.

He said that: “The advancing danger and the serious challenges facing us all take the shape of discord and mutual killings which have gained ground in our ranks. This is a war where there is no victor but it will invite perils for all”.

He recalled that the Extraordinary Islamic Summit, which was held in Makkah in 2012, had adopted the initiative of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud for the establishment of a center for dialogue among the islamic doctrines for the benefit of mutual understanding. He added that the OIC is striving hard to ensure that the Center becomes a reality in the near future.

The SG invoked a number of other challenges facing the OIC and the Arab League, including the identity challenge, the challenge of achieving an innovative approach to coexistence that is mindful of the legitimate national interests of states and that lays the foundations at the same time for regional and inter-regional concord and coexistence and maximizes mutual interests and benefits rather than engaging in conflicts and mutual killings.

  1. Yes, it is true that Islam is hijacked by fanatics, illiterates and extremists who are not following the true teaching of Islam. Terrorism, violence, hatred and killing innocent people are not the teaching of Islam. The fanatic group of Muslims is ruining the peaceful religion. Islam teaches that unless man learns to live at peace with himself and his fellow human beings, he cannot live at peace with God. In Islam, you shall find peace and tranquility of the heart which is the fruit of submitting to the Will of God. Islam re-enforces the concept of humanity and respect for individual liberty. Islam places great stress on freedom of conscience, including the freedom to choose one’s religion, as one of the fundamental rights of all human beings. The Quran clearly states, “There should be no compulsion in religion” (2:257). Promote hatred is not the mission of any religion.   2. The Honorable Mr. Madani has stated a fact, and for this I thank him. However, the leadership of all Muslim-majority countries should have come to this glaringly-obvious conclusion forty years ago — if we limit ourselves to recent history — or centuries ago, looking further into the past.

    The watershed moment in recent history I refer to above is the decision in 1974 by the Pakistan Parliament — a political body — to declare a section of the Pakistanl population to be non-Muslim, "by majority vote" — a religious decision by a political authority! This draconian misstep was taken despite the fact that the Pakistanis involved (a law-abiding group called the Ahmadis) vehemently protested, professing their allegiance to Islam by EVERY TEST in the Quran and Sunnah! Any observer will agree that, tragically, hundreds of murders of Ahmadis have occurred after that fateful decision in 1974. And the nation of Pakistan? Since then, DOWNHILL all the way! Yet, so-called 'Islam-loving' demagogues — in Pakistan and elsewhere — continue to harangue the ignorant public and goad them toward further acts of violence.

    In a wider, global context, Islamic militancy has taken hold of many communities — Afghanistan, Nigeria, the Caucasus, sub-Saharan Africa. Throughout the world, murders and acts of mayhem are committed by criminals and reprobates using 'defense of Islam' as their excuse and motivation. This, despite the fact that Islam abhors the killing of innocents.

    It is a pressing need for all governments to take note of the violence being perpetrated in the name of religion, and shackle the ringleaders. The true teachings of Islam and other faiths need to be emphasized, in particular those that highlight the unity of mankind.
