If, like other civilized societies, road safety issues are properly addressed and available resources are appropriately utilized in Pakistan, then road traffic accidents can be controlled to great extent. More than 80% accidents took place due to the negligence of the drivers. Road discipline reflects the discipline of the civil society.
Inspector General, National Highways & Motorway Police expressed these views during his address to the students of the BahriaUniversity, Islamabad. He informed with sorrow “every year large number of youngsters get involve in road accidents and we are determined to save the precious lives of young people at all cost”.
Explaining the major causes of road accidents to audience the Inspector General told that over speeding, careless and rash driving, car and motorbike racing, use of mobile phone during driving, ignoring use of seat belt and most of the all driving at an early age were the usual reasons of most of the accidents. The Inspector General said that one of the main functions of NH&MP was to create mass awareness regarding road safety issues. He said that was prime responsibility of parents and teachers to guide and teach road safety measures to the children. He informed that NH&MP would start issuing driving licenses in near future and it would be a mandatory pass to join motorways after few years. The IGP motivated the students by reminding them “you are living in a great country, our nation possesses lots of potential and qualities and by the grace of almighty Allah future of Pakistan is bright, the students should proceed abroad for higher education but they must come back to serve their own nation”. Rector, BahriaUniversity, Voice Admiral (R) Shahid Iqbal thanked the Inspector General and appreciated the steps taken by him to uplift the performance and working of National Highways & Motorway Police. Deputy Inspector General, Muhammad Zubair Hashmi, SSP Muhammad Ashfaq Khan, SSP Nasir Mahmood Sati, SP Hasan Asad Alvi and faculty members of the University were also present there. The address of IGP was followed by a quiz session; questions related to road safety were asked from the students and gift bags were distributed. Road Safety stall displaying pamphlets/brochures and different gadgets used by Motorway Police was also set up at the venue.
