The Institution of Engineers Pakistan (IEP) has evolved a nation-wide plan to guide and assist the government to address country’s major socio-economic problems. A spokesman of IEP, Engr Arjumund A Skaikh, told here on Sunday at a media briefing that IEP would organise seminars and panel discussions in various parts of the country throughout the year to give technical input to relevant government departments on crucial issues, like energy, water shortage and environment hazards. The IEP has strengthened its role over the years to ensure maximum involvement of engineers in the nation-building task. It would be improper to handle socio-economic issues, mere with political frame of mind or with interest-based approach, said Arjumund, who chaired and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and organised the event. In a rapidly-changing world where legislative, social and economic developments directly affect the environment and where technological advancements provide radically different ways of working, CPD provides a platform that could keep abreast of these changes, broaden available skills and make engineers’ professional work more effective. The CPD or the CPE is the means by which members of engineering professional bodies maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge and skills for developing personal qualities required in their professional lives. The Pakistan Engineering Council under its Act has mandate for introducing and ensuring continued professional development activities amongst its growing community of engineers and has devised a comprehensive framework titled Professional Development of Engineers approved by the Government of Pakistan. In order to promote the objectives set forth by government; the IEP Rawalpindi-Islamabad Centre had regularly been holding seminars, conferences, short courses, workshops, technical lectures, symposia etc.
IEP's initiative to act as "think Tank" towards resolving country's crucial socio – economic issues is, of course, a welcome step, and in this context, we urge the govt to pay heed to the proposals put forth by these professionals in various sectors of the economy like energy, environment, infrastructure, investment promotion etc, but unfortunately, govt's approach in most of the cases remain political oriented to win timely public applause where as other options suggested by the professionals in identifying priority areas and strategy for implementation may give better results.
