LAHORE – Exhibitions, screenings and final rounds of competitions marked the end of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Olympiad 2011 on Friday. The event was a great experience for both the delegates and the LUMS host team. Workshops were arranged in photography, dramatics and music for students to learn from the event and take something back. Singer Shiraz Uppal, who attended the event, said, “It was a great pleasure being at the Music Workshop arranged by the LUMS Olympiad.
I found that all the students were very passionate about music and at the same time very talented too. I guess these sorts of workshops should be held more frequently as there is no formal academy in our country to learn this art so with the experience of senior musicians and singers, the students can really be benefited”. After three days, the delegates finally got a chance to show-off their artistic skills at the Photo Essay, Click Flick and Thematic Art Exhibition. The exhibition ran for more than three hours in the afternoon so that the delegates and LUMS students had ample time to come to the venue, the Rec Room and admire the art.
For their Photo Essay submissions, delegates were given the theme “Pakistaniat” – what is it to be a Pakistani. All the submissions were excellent and reflected the hard work that the delegates had put into making them. But there were a few that stood out from the rest. The Photo Essay by Iqra University was especially captivating with the photographs showing the motions of a hand stubbing a cigarette in the ground and then another hand watering that spot in the ground leading to the emergence of a plant. It highlighted the idea that there are those who are destroying Pakistan, but then are others who are simultaneously fostering the growth of our nation – and it is these people who are acting like true Pakistanis.
For Click Flick, delegates were asked to take photographs on one of the three themes – “Standing out from the crowd”, “Go Green” and “The best creations are made to the beat of good music”. The most submissions were for the Thematic Art competition. Five themes were provided to the delegates – Childhood, Heaven on Earth, Moonlight, Possession and Vampires, and delegates had the option of choosing any medium such as oil paints, pastels etc for their submission. Some of the work was very skillful, other not so much. The winners of Click Flick, Thematic Art and Photo Essay will be revealed later during the Formal Dinner.
The music video competition had a few entries out of which some stood out because of their creativity, storyline and visuals. The finalists were LGS Johar Town branch, LGS Paragon and SKANS Academy. Out of these, LGS JT emerged as the winner of the competition. The screening for Speed Filming was a huge success as the auditorium was jam packed with delegates who were hooting and enjoying themselves.
The final round of the Mind Quest Competition was intense as the teams went head to head to claim the grand prize. The finalists were Aitchison College 1 and 2, Progressive Public School and UET Taxila. In the end, Aitchison 1 emerged victorious. Preparing for the Movie Trivia Competition must have been a treat for the delegates as it tested their knowledge about movies and all the fun facts gathered along the way. NUST won the competition, giving a strong performance throughout.
