The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Tuesday arrested former chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Dr Abdul Jabbar along with three other officers over illegal appointments, a private TV channel reported.

The channel said that FIA Additional Director Hazrat Ali supervised the raid in which Jabbar and members of a three-member PEMRA committee, Safdar Rehman, Sardar Irfan Ashraf and Shehzad Nawaz Cheema, were arrested.

The suspects, according to the channel’s sources, advertised for 18 positions in the electronic media watchdog but hired 60 personnel allegedly for personal financial gains.

The FIA crime cell has broadened its probe following the arrests.

A tussle between Dr Jabbar and in-office chairman Chaudhry Abdul Rasheed started in March last year when the federal government removed the former from the post of PEMRA chairman and appointed Rasheed in his place.
