Call for scrapping Objectives Resolution

LAHORE – A provincial convention of Aman Itihad held at the Ali Auditorium presented key features for a new social charter where the participants called for removal of the Objective Resolution from the constitution which is the basis of extremist and militant mindset. They said the state should be secular for allowing the people to exercise their religious obligations freely while the judicial system must follow the Bangladesh Supreme Court’s recent verdicts to ban the religious parties from taking part in the political and electoral activities.
The convention also favoured a welfare state Instead of a theocratic one and elimination of the establishment’s role in political manoeuvring. It also suggested accountability of judiciary and army within the Parliament and creation of new provinces to give identity various nationalities. They also demanded low cost election process, necessary amendments in the Political Parties Act to bind them to allocate 50 percent seats in general election for women and minorities.
