PTI Central Information Secretary Shireen Mazari on Sunday called on the government to hand over KP-generated electricity’s generation, transmission and distribution to the KP government to put a stop to the prevalent corruption and electricity theft.
She said the expose of the PESCO chief’s electricity theft makes it even more critical that KP is given charge for electricity generation from the province. She regretted that the federal government had yet to respond to the detailed proposal sent to it by the KP CM.
According to Mazari, this showed the non-seriousness of the government and its total lack of commitment to improving governance.
In addition, by allowing officials to indulge in electricity theft, the government was complicit in passing on the cost of electricity theft on to the consumers in the form of inflated electricity bills. She said this was shameful as poor paying consumers were being made to pay the price of electricity theft by government officials and departments.
She demanded that the government respond positively and fast to the KP CM’s detailed proposal regarding taking control of the power sector in KP. The PTI lawmaker also demanded that the government remove PESCO chief immediately.
If KPK gets control of generation, transmission and distribution belonging to the province, they can
1) provide electricity in provide without any load shedding. KPK resources produce about 5000 MW at very low cost and deman is onlly 2500 MW. They can make money by selling the surplus power to the punjab.
2) KPK can reduce the electricity rate by more than half, as the cost of producing electricity fro KPK resources is lowest. Right now the the punjab takes away their low cost energy and sells back to them at very high cost almost 3 time the cost of production.
3) Based on generation capacity and demand in the province there should no load shedding at all in province.
4) the federal government which dominated by people of Punjab (Read Lahore) of Kashmiri origin is not expected to treat KPK fairly. They are trying all means to give tough time to KPK government so it is not successful.
