The polling for by-elections commenced on Thursday in NA-69 Khushab constituency of Punjab and PK-50 Haripur constituency of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, private news channels reported.
Strict security arrangements were put up for the by-polls in both constituencies.
In NA-69, 3, 37,645 registered voters were expected to be polling for their representative. The seat fell vacant after former National Assembly Member Sumera Malik was disqualified for having a fake degree on a petition filed by Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf’s (PTI) Umer Aslam Awan after May 2013 general elections.
Thursday’s by-polls involved a strong competition between PTI’s Awan and Malik’s son Malik Aziz Khan from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
In PK-50, the seat fell vacant after PTI’s elected MPA Yousaf Ayub Khan was disqualified by an election tribunal in Sept 2013 and subsequently the Supreme Court over submission of a fake graduation degree in the general elections of May 2013.
