In India, a 25-year-old woman was beaten to death by her husband and in-laws for dowry at Bangai in Gorakhpur.
The police lodged a case against the husband and in-laws on the writ of the deceased’s father and have also sent the body for postmortem.
According to reports, four years ago Lalita Devi, 25, daughter of Ramakant, married Umesh, son of Jokhan. Ramakant informed the police that Umesh’s father, Jokhan, mother Jyoti, brother Raju and his wife used to physically torture his daughter for dowry. They had demanded a motorcycle, Rs 20,000 cash and a gold chain since her marriage. Umesh used to work in Mumbai at the time but he too started harassing her when he returned two months ago.
“On Friday night, someone from the village called me and said Jokhan and his family members have killed my daughter. I rushed there and found Lalita’s body in the verandah of the house but no one was to be found there. I immediately informed the police about the incident.” Ramakant said. Lalita was also three months pregnant, according to his father.
“We have lodged a case against Umesh, Jokhan, Jyotii, Raju and his wife, who are all absconding for the murder of Lalita. There were injury marks all over the body and it seems that she was beaten to death. Nothing is final and we are waiting for the postmortem report,” a police officer said.
