At least 14 people were killed and more than 100 were injured in a huge explosion before Tuesday midnight at a security building in northern city Mansoura of Egypt, according to state media.
The blast was reportedly cause by a car bomb and led to the partial collapse of the building.
More than 100 people were injured and according to media reports, provincial security chief was among those hurt.
The blast shattered windows of nearby buildings and its impact was felt about 12 miles away.
Acting Prime Minister Hazem Beblawi has called it “an act of terrorism”.
Talking to a satellite channel he said “The state will do its utmost to pursue the criminals who executed, planned and supported that attack.”
Attacks on Egypt’s security forces and police have increased since Islamist President Mohammed Morsi’s ousting by the army in July.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
