Equal rights for minorities

The PM was wrong to assume they have

Ideally there should be no discrimination in a country’s law of the land, but if somehow that is not the case, every care should be taken to make sure that the minority communities can enjoy those rights that are afforded to them under the law, without fear of persecution. Pakistan’s record has not been stellar in this regard; minority communities have been treated like second class citizens, with government looking the other way when religious fanatics attack Christians Hindus and Ahmdis. Tolerance is a thing of the past around these shores, maybe.

Amid this, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s statement that minorities enjoy equal rights in Pakistan if not downright insulting, certainly attempts to paint another picture, one that is not seeped into the ground realities. He clearly seemed to have no idea of Pakistan’s track record in protection of minorities’ rights. Or maybe that was the intention behind his speech that he gave at a Christmas related ceremony at Governor House in Lahore. To refresh his memory, here are a few of the transgressions against the minorities. A whole colony of Christians in Lahore, Joseph Colony, was burned down by religious nuts while a few years ago almost 100 Christians were killed in Gojra. In another incident, over 30 members of Ahmdi communities were killed in none other than the provincial capital Lahore.Former Governor Punjab Salmaan Taseer and Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti, a Christian, lost their lives owing to their stand on blasphemy law. Hindu community has been persecuted so much so that they have started to migrate to India. What is happening with the Shias, who are also in minority to Sunni (which include ultra conservative and fundamentalists Wahabi, Deobandi sects), is in clear contradiction to what the PM was trying to say. As far as minorities’ rights are concerned, Pakistan needs a lot more to do.

The government should start with enforcing laws, spreading awareness and creating an environment where each religion and each sect can co-exist. It should also start formulating a framework to amend or repeal those laws that create a distinction between what should ideally be considered equal citizens by the state, instead of being divided into categories for easy target picking. Maybe the prime minister was right about minorities enjoying equal rights, but that time has not come yet. Far from it, but maybe if we work together we can bring that time sooner rather than later.

  2. i totally agree .we should treat everyone equally.religion is kind of a personal thing .we should not be concern by others religion .even the quran says we should not force anybody to change their religion .we dont have the right to!!!!

  3. i agree with the person. everybody has their own religion and we should not force them to change!. Allah and our prophet PBUH has foridden us to force any body to change their religion.i totally agree with rida that we should not be concern by other peoples religion.people should stop disrespecting, killing, burning christian, hindus and all the others who are not muslims.we should respect other religions rather than disrespecting other religions and making other people have a bad view of our religion!. in our religion we are not allowed allowed to force some one to change their religion.we can ask them politely if they would change to your religion rather than forcing them to.!!!
every person has their own rights and no one should stop their rights.they also have just as many rights as we have.just think for minute what if we were treated just as bad as we treat them now? so its better that we mind our own business and stop criticizing other peoples religion!!!!!!.

  4. Yes,i agree with you.Islam offers rights for everyone.Every human being has a right to live first of all, then a right of property, freedom and happiness. The Quran states "لا إكراه في الدين" which means "no compulsion in religion."Further more the Holy Quran in surah Kafiroon explains that : Say: "Oh non believers! I do not worship what you worship and niether will you worship what I worship. And i will not woship what you worship and.You will not worship what i worship. To you your religion,to me my religion!"And there are many more referances in the Quran linking to rights. We don't have a right to boss people around!

  5. I agree with Rida, ALIZAY and Pareesae. Not only should Islam give equal rights to its people, but other religions and countries should, as well.I think different religions should give other religions space and rights. As it is said in the blog, if Muslims attack and destroy some other religion's holy place, the government ignores it and lets it pass. but if a Mosque is destroyed by some other religion, Muslims make a big deal out of it.
We cannot force anyone to change their religion, whatever that religion might be. It is said in the Holy Quran, by Allah and by our Prophet, that there should be no compulsion in religion.
Many people are violating the rights of minorities ( and when i say minorities, I am not only referring to different religions). Everybody has a right to live( protection of life), right of property, privacy, freedom, protection of places of worship, to vote, right to choose their profession, justice, law, marriage, etc.
Minorities are not to be discriminated because of looks, religion, etc.

  6. Islam offers equal rights to its minorities. We should treat every one equally and should respect their religion, sacred places and provide them shelter.Yes i agree to this but it is not only our present prime minister Nawaz Sharifs responsibility to track records in protection because this is not just happening in Pakistan but also in other countries where minorities are not enjoing their due rights and have been considered unwanted.

  7. I definitely agree to this. We should not be the ones killing others just because they have a different religion which we don't follow. It’s illegal and prohibited. Religion is something that a person has a choice to keep and follow and, all we can do is to kindly, without any violence tell the other person if he is following a wrong religion with proof given to the person to support our religion like for Muslims the Holy Quran. The prophet Muhammad PBUH also said that if a Muslim kill or treat the non-Muslim badly, no matter how good we are on the Day of Judgment if the non believer complains about the Muslim the Prophet Muhammad PBUH said he will take the side of the non-believer instead of the muslim. We have no right over the non-believers to force another to change their religion as it is said a family relative can't force their family member to change their religion so who are we to. If a family member can’t force someone in their family to change their religion then who are we, the people to force that person. Religion is what we believe

  8. I also agree.Everyone should have there rights and you cannot force anyone to change there religion because Islam says that there is no forcing in Islam.everyone has the right of freedom, property and security, right to make choices and the prophet pbuh has said that if any Muslim hurts the other non- Muslim on the day of judgement I will be the non- Muslims lawyer.this tells us that any Muslim has no right to be mean to a non- Muslim.and in the holy Quran it is. Mentioned that god could have made us single people but his plan was to test us In all virtures.this means that god could have made us the same but he didn't because he wanted to test us that how we behave to other people and he is the judge and will tell us that
What are the right virtures and wrong virtures. you should also learn to accept other peoples opinion rather than start fighting.

  9. We say that we are Muslims but do we show this through our actions? Well no, pushing away the non Muslims and torturing them is not what a true Muslim does. in one of his sermon the prophet pbuh discussed the rights of minorities in a community and he has clearly forbidden us to destroy their place of worship or to hurt them with our words. he even said that it is we who have to protect them. even God says in one of his surah "For you your religion and for me my" which means we just have faith on what we believe rather than interfering in others religion and acts. most importantly we cannot judge anyone because Allah is the only judge.
for a better society as prescribed by the writer of this blog we should make new rules and try to spread awareness so every religion enjoys their rights.
