Leader of Indian Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday hinted of joining a coalition government in Delhi as he vowed to penalize corrupt politicians and clean up the dirty politics in India while addressing a rally in the state capital of Delhi.
“If we form the government, we will pass the anti-corruption law and send corrupt BJP and Congress leaders to jail,” Kejriwal said.
Kejriwal’s party performed stunningly in the December 4 state elections as thousands of angered voters chose AAP over the ruling Congress and opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) due to the recent corruption scandals of the parties.
AAP’s success in the state elections was also seen as a major cause of the recent approval of a landmark anti-corruption bill by the lower house of Indian parliament.
Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (Common Man’s Party) won 28 of the 70 seats at the polls for an assembly, trouncing the ruling Congress which took eight and depriving the biggest winner — the BJP with 31 — of a majority.
AAP’s success poses a threat to India’s leading parties at general elections of 2014.
Previously refusing to receive support from the ruling or the opposition parties, AAP is now considering forming a coalition government in Delhi for which it has been seeking opinion from the public and supporters, asking them to voice their views through telephone and SMS.
On Monday, 23 December AAP will be announcing its final decision.
