Ghalib Khan, a health technician associated with Anti-Polio vaccination sector, was shot dead by unknown militants inside a health center at Jamrud, Khyber agency on Saturday morning.
Official sources said that Ghalib Khan was present at the health center at Ghundai, Jamrud, when some motorcyclists entered and opened indiscriminate fire at him. Multiple gunshot wounds led to Ghalib Khan’s death at a nearby hospital, where he was rushed after the incident. However, he had lost the battle for his life before reaching there.
The official said that Ghalib Khan had received threats from time to time in recent past. He was directed by militants to disassociate himself of anti-polio vaccination drive. However, Ghalib Khan had turned such threats a deaf ear and continued his efforts.
The latest data reveals that during the current year, 54 out of 77 polio cases registered, were from Federally Administrative Tribal Areas (FATA). Majority of these polio cases belong to North Waziristan and Khyber Agency. Whereas 10 out of 23, registered in three provinces, belong to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Ironically, not a single case was reported from Balochistan amidst frequent acts of violence and agitation against government.
Chief of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf, Imran Khan had visited Akora Khattak, Nowshehra, on December 18 (Wednesday) in a bid to encourage polio vaccination and discourage resistance against the drive.
