Yunus Habib reiterated his former statement on Friday by stating that he had never paid any money to Nawaz Sharif or brother Shahbaz Sharif.
Former President of Mehran Bank, Habib is a major actor in the Mehrangate scandal; a major political scandal in the country’s history in which political parties were found to have been bribed by Pakistan Army and ISI, to rig the general elections of 1990.
Talking to journalists on Friday, Habib said that on cross-checking his statement about the Sharif family from his diary, he discovered that he had not paid money to the Sharifs but to a friend of theirs.
“It was a misunderstanding,” he added.
The Federal Investigation Authority has recently kicked of its investigation regarding the scandal.
On asking if he had been approached by the FIA to get his statement in the Asghar Khan case scam, Habib said he has not been contacted by the FIA yet.
Habib had previously stated during the hearing of the Asghar Khan Case that he had given Rs3.5 million to PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif and Rs2.5 million to Shahbaz Sharif through someone named Asif Jamshed.
In 2012, Habib has stated in the hearing of the case at Supreme Court that former president Ghulam Ishaq Khan and former army chief Mirza Aslam Beg had forced him to arrange Rs400 million for politicians in the name of national interest before the 1990 general elections.
He had apologized to the court for his deed and said, “I am the victim of that national interest and apologise for whatever I did to comply with the order of the former president.”
What a turn coat. This man should be sent the gallows
Mr Habib is right. This is what happens when FIA or ISI make a phone call. After all, ISI was fully involved in this hateful bribery scandal. Shariefs have no moral values. Otherwise, they should have a courage to admit and move on. Sharief's tried to do the same with NARDA's chairman to have him change his stance. Luckily, the Chairman Nadra had some values.
