KARACHI – With the transfer of gas fields to provinces, the Sindh government has decided to generate electricity through gas-based thermal power plants from small or dormant gas fields in the province, it has been learnt.
Well-placed sources told Pakistan Today that the feasibility studies for the power plants on small gas fields would be purchased from Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) so that generation of power can be started at the earliest.
Under the 18th constitutional amendment, the Sindh government now has a 50 percent share in all natural resources of the province, including the gas fields owned by the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) in the province.
Some gas fields in the country including Sindh are supplying a limited quantity of gas and cannot be connected to the main gas pipeline as it is not financially viable. These gas reserves are either not being optimally flared or the gas fields are dormant.
Sindh has at least three gas fields that can generate a combined total of 55.3MW electricity through development of thermal power plants. Gas-based power plants at Nur and Bangla fields can generate 29.9MW; Jakhro gas field can give 7.5MW; while a steam-based power plant at Sara West gas field can generate 23.9MW.
Recently, PPIB Managing Director NA Zuberi forwarded a letter No 1(102)PPIB/11/PRJ to the Sindh chief secretary informing him about the feasibility of setting up thermal power plants at the said fields.
The letter exclusively available with Pakistan Today stated: “We feel pleasure in informing you that the PPIB has conducted a feasibility study of thermal power plants based on gas from small gas fields of Pakistan. There are certain gas fields in Pakistan which are offering limited gas supply and as such are not feasible to be connected to the main gas pipeline due to economic reasons.”
“The feasibility study was aimed at authentication of gas availability from such gas fields offering limited gas supply for limited periods and development of gas-based thermal power plant from these fields. “The feasibility study was conducted by Socoin Ingenier

  1. Kindly please let us know as we can be a part of this project if we know the location of well head with additional information as mentioned; quality of gas, composition of gas, minimum and maximum discharge pressure in psig or bar and the flow rate in mmcfd further more we even can compress the gas into the high pressure cylinders or we can manufacture LNG at gas field and than transport to the end consumer.
Please contact us as we have complete expertise.
    Your kind reply is awaited
