LAHORE – Amidst widespread rumours of his death, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif is recovering fast at a hospital near Park Lane, London on Thursday, after undergoing an open heart surgery a day before. Nawaz was hospitalised on Wednesday after complaining of pain in his chest.
During examination of his blood vessels at the hospital, Nawaz started bleeding, upon which three specialist doctors performed angioplasty. Nawaz was later shifted to ICU, where he would undergo more tests and medical checkups for a week. There were some reports that Nawaz was still in a critical condition and had not recovered completely. His weeklong stay in the hospital stokes apprehensions that doctors are not sure about the success of the operation and want to take further tests to save Nawaz’s life, a source privy to development claimed.
According to Nawaz’s private secretary Asif Kirmani, he was recovering fast after the operation. PML-N Senator Pervaiz Rashid said Nawaz first felt the problem of irregular heartbeat when he was detained in Adiyala Jail in 1999. The problem continued but never caused concern. However, during his trip to London for a medical checkup of his wife Kalsoom Nawaz, he felt the same pain and was admitted to the hospital.
“Doctors performed a minor surgical operation and Nawaz is now out of danger. He is quite normal; he is talking and walking with ease,” he said. As soon as news about Nawaz’s operation made headlines on Wednesday, rumours started circulating about his death. Some political leaders and activists, even the general public, started believing that Nawaz had passed away.
Adding fuel to the fire were some websites, including www.doseofme.com, www.columnpk.com, www.allvoices.com, www.paperpk.com, who continued airing news that Nawaz was no more. Rumours gained strength as no one from the PML-N bothered to deny the fabricated news. In a statement later, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif thanked all those who inquired after the health of the PML-N chief.
