Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday accepted government’s plea regarding formation of larger bench over the NA-118 vote verification issue. During case proceedings Monday, the PML-N MNA Malik Riaz told the court that the election tribunal’s order was illegal as there was no provision in the law for votes to be verified as genuine through thumbprints. He argued that it was impossible to verify all 150,000 votes casted at NA-118, however the recounting process could only take place in the polling stations where objections were raised. Later, the additional attorney general requested the court to form a larger bench to look into the matter. The court approved the request and forwarded the file to the chief justice of the high court. Election tribunal had on November 18 directed the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to verify if the votes casted at NA-118 were genuine by examining thumb prints. The plea to verify voters’ thumb prints was submitted by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) candidate Hamid Zaman.
