A group of 17 students from The Skinners’ School in Kent, UK called on Pakistan High Commissioner for UK Wajid Shamsul Hasan at his office on Sunday. These students have been selected to represent Pakistan at the 61st session of Harvard Model United Nations Conference in Boston, Massachusetts in January next year.
The visit by the Skinners School students was aimed at developing an understanding of Pakistan, its people and policies on key issues which are going to be debated at the conference. The students would represent Pakistan’s position on key foreign policy issues by proposing and negotiating mock-UN resolutions. The students were accompanied by their English teacher Mr James Coltella.
The High Commissioner gave the students an introduction to Pakistan, its geography, culture, heritage, people and economy. The High Commissioner said: “Pakistan is the 6th largest country in the world with highly talented manpower and natural resources. Pakistan’s geography is a profound blend of landscapes varying from plains to deserts and plateaus to mountains of the Himalayas, Karakoram and Hindukush.”
On Pakistan’s foreign policy, Wajid said that foreign policy of Pakistan was based on the principles of promoting international peace and security, fostering goodwill and friendly relations with all nations and encouraging the settlement of international disputes through peaceful means.
Furthermore, the high commissioner highlighted that Government of Pakistan had decided to seek a peaceful end to terrorism in the country. He said that the government will soon start dialogues to end violence and integrate all segments of society into the national mainstream. In this regard, the government urged the US to cease drone strikes, so that further casualties and sufferings could be averted, he added.
Wajid Shamsul Hasan briefed the students on all ambits of Pakistan’s foreign policy, including bilateral relations with the UK, China, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan’s nuclear policy, role in the United Nations including Pakistan’s much appreciated contribution in Peace Keeping Missions. The interaction ended with the question and answer session.
The Skinner’s School delegation was full of praise for the High Commissioner and thanked him for the extremely useful briefing about Pakistan which prepared them well for the conference.
Deputy High Commissioner Muhammad Imran Mirza and officers of the High Commission also interacted with the students.
