Hamida for legislation to discourage dowry

Provincial Minister for Women Development Hamida Waheeduddin said on Tuesday that legislation would be taken up to discourage the practice of dowry in the province.

Addressing seminars on “Women Empowerment Package” at Girls College Marghazar Colony Gujrat and Government Post Graduate College Mandi Bahauddin, she said that Punjab government wanted to enhance the quota of women in government jobs under “Punjab Women Empowerment Package” and a special age relaxation upto three years has also been given.

The minister said that practical measures were being taken to allocate 15 percent quota for women in government as well as private sectors and a special committee has been formed in this regard. She said that special day care centres for the children of women employees were being established in all over the province while women ombudsman office has already been set up. She said that construction of hostels in Gujrat district for working women would be started soon.

Punjab Women Development Director Moeen Akhtar said that Working Women Hostel in 16 districts have been established while 200 buses have also been purchased for girls colleges. He said that 90-day maternity leave sanction process has been streamlined to prevent delays, and the condition of health fitness certificate prior to duty resumption has also been removed.
