Lt General Haroon Aslam on Thursday sent his resignation to the Defence Ministry.
Sources said General Aslam – who was the senior most general officer of the army – resigned after he was superseded by General Raheel Sharif as chief of army Staff and General Rashad Mahmood as the chairman joint chiefs of staff committee.
They said the charge of chief of logistic staff was withdrawn from Aslam 10 days ago, adding that a farewell ceremony was held in his honour a few days ago.
Meanwhile, a notification regarding the appointments of Gen Sharif and Gen Mahmood was also issued by the General Headquarters, Rawalpindi.
It is an army tradition that when a junior officer supersedes a senior there are two options; either the senior resigns or continues to work under his or her junior. Gen Aslam opted for resignation.
Stringent security arrangements were made for the 23-kilometre journey from the AFIC to the special court which has been set up in the National Library in Islamabad.
