Germany on Thursday summoned the US ambassador to Berlin over suspicions that Washington spied on Chancellor Angela Merkel’s mobile phone, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.
In this regard, American ambassador John B Emerson was summoned for talks with German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle. In the meeting, Westerwelle will personally meet with the US envoy and explain Germany’s concerns over the alleged spying, the spokeswoman said.
On Wednesday, Merkel had called US President Obama in which she demanded answers that the US spies may have monitored her phone, warning this would be breach of trust between international partners.
The allegations sparked outrage in Germany and Merkel’s spokesman Steffen Seibert said in a statement and said that she had demanded an immediate and comprehensive explanation from
Washington.
The White House did not deny the possibility that her communications may have been intercepted in the past but now her calls are not being listened.
