Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said the Kashmir issue is based on historic facts and stressed that the United Nations (UN) honour its own resolution for solving the issue.

Referring to his statement made in the UN General Assembly, Nawaz told a private television channel, “I have tried to remind the UN that it should implement the resolution passed by its Security Council.

In his address on Friday, Nawaz had stressed that the UN continue to remain attentive to the issue of Jammu and Kashmir and realise the right of the Kashmiris to self-determination. He had also pointed that the sufferings of Kashmiris could not be brushed under the carpet because of power politics.

In response to a question, Nawaz said he would try to bring India and Pakistan closer during his upcoming meeting with Indian PM Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of UN session in New York.

He stressed that money spent on buying weapons for war should be used for the welfare of the people of Pakistan and India.

He said at present, the situation in Pakistan, India and the entire region was not satisfactory due to the arms race.

Nawaz said his government was committed to eradicating terrorism from Pakistan and warned that the country would resort to the use of force, if necessary.

About his October meeting with United States President Barack Obama at the White House, he said efforts would be made to remove the misunderstandings between the US and Pakistan.
