Govt set to drop energy bombshell on consumers from Oct 1

Government is all set to drop the energy bombshell on the general public from October, 1.

Sources said government has decided to scale up power tariffs for domestic consumers. The new tariffs will range between Rs 1.60 and Rs 3 per unit from October, 1.

The increment in the power tariff is being made to abide by the pledge the government made with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

As per Ministry of Water and Power, the tariff will be increased at the rate of Rs 1.60 per unit for domestic consumers using electricity from 200 to 500 units per month, Rs 2 per unit for the consumers using electricity from 500 to 800 units per month, Rs 2.50 per unit for the consumers falling within the electricity consumption slab from 800 to 1000 units per month. The consumers using electricity from 1000 to 1500 units will have to bear an increase in cost amounting to Rs 3 per unit.

Consumers will officially be informed be on September 30 and the revised tariff will be effective from October, 1.

Government had already jacked up the power tariff to Rs 6.58 per unit for commercial and industrial consumers from August, 1.
