Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has apprioved a summary regarding import of electricity from India, but decision regarding tariff rates has not been taken yet.
Sources said that in April 2011 India offered electricity to Pakistan. Later on secretary-level negotiations were held between both countries in this regard.
According to sources, on July 1, 2011, the Water and Power Ministry formed a working group to import 500-megawatts of electricity from India through a high voltage direct current link.
Negotiations between both governments remained successful on the project. On June 11, the project was discussed with an Indian delegation.
The National Transmission Dispatch Company (NTDC) has confirmed that Nawaz has approved the summary for this purpose. However, it has been advised in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) that the government and the NTDC will establish a trade company in India.
Energy exchange or IPPs will buy the electricity from state-owned plants.
