The federal minister for Planning and development, Ahsan Iqbal, has said that the federal government has advised the provinces to initiate a Nutrition Emergency Policy to confront the challenge of malnutrition in the women and children. The minister expressed these views during the inaugural ceremony of National Nutritional Survey report-2012 on Tuesday. He stressed on the importance of nutrition in our health system and the need to develop programs to educate our doctors on the issues of malnutrition in the country. Mr. Iqbal suggested that we should initiate a mass awareness campaign to inform our people regarding malnutrition and its affects on their lives. This campaign should not be limited to the major cities but should commence at the grass root level. Ahsan Iqbal said that the results of National Nutrition survey 2011 are shocking for us and revealed that the health of mothers and children has declined further. This is horrible as nutritional deficiency badly affects growth of children. The minister stated that we have to attain our Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) not to appease the international community but to benefit ourselves. In this regard, the federal government is working as facilitator and concerned departments are on board to achieve the set goals. Ahsan further commented that the country can not be economically stable when its human resources are not healthy and strong.
