The United States (US) has expressed hope that the overturning of Dr Shakeel Afridi’s 33-year-long sentence would lead to an outcome that reflects the fact that the killing al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was in the interests of both Pakistan and the US.

US State Department Spokesperson Marie Harf said Dr Afridi’s prosecution and conviction had sent a wrong message about the importance of the issue.

“Our position on Dr Afridi has been very clear. We regret that he was convicted and also the severity of his sentence,” she said.
