At least five people were killed in electrocution and other incidents as swelling water of Indus River wreaked havoc in Katcha area of district Naushehro Feroz, local officials said on Wednesday.
Five people, Asif Arain, Rizwan Ali, Rehman Kalhoro, Murtaza and Faisal Khaskhelly, were killed and 10 others injured in electrocution and a house collapse incident in Naushehro, Moro and Kandiaro towns, said Naushehro Feroz Deputy Commissioner Syed Mehdi Raza Shah.
Flooding in Indus has affected around 50,400 people in the district and hundreds of displaced persons have been evacuated to relief camps, officials said.
The water level in Indus at Kotri has been increasing and many houses were damaged after flooding in the river.
Water level at Kotri Barrage was recorded as 289,000 cusecs while the water level at the Sukkur Barrage was recorded as 342,000 cusecs.
As many as 250 villages were submerged and crops spreading over hundreds of acres destroyed near Dadu-MoroBridge in Naushero Feroz. Six villages in Nawabshah district were also badly affected due to floodwater.
The floodwaters also wreaked havoc in Bachal Malah area of Khairpur district in Sindh, where people struggled to move towards safe places in over six feet of floodwater.
In Punjab, several villages were inundated after a breach in a dyke in Alipur area of Muzaffargarh district.
Several localities were inundated and road links disconnected while crops of sugar canes, cotton, and pulses ruined after breach in the safety dyke.
A spokesman of Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said the people of affected areas were being shifted to safe areas.
He said that standing crops on thousands of acres of land had also been submerged.
Indus was flowing in medium flood at Guddu and low flood at Chashma and “Sukkur-Kotri Reach”.
The Chenab river is also flowing in medium flood at Panjnad‚ whereas Ravi river at Sidhnai and Sutlej at Islam Headworks is in low flood stage.
Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday chaired a meeting at Bilawal House Karachi to review the flood situation via video conferencing.
Sindh Chief Minister‚ provincial ministers and concerned secretaries were also present in the meeting.
President Asif Ali Zardari directed the authorities to utilise all possible resources to rehabilitate the flood victims.
