The Supreme Court was informed on Wednesday that the armed wings of political parties were responsible for the worsening law and order in the Karachi.

The Rangers Sindh director general told the Supreme Court that armed wings of the political parties were involved in criminal activities.

During hearing of the Karachi unrest case, the five-member SC bench reviewed the performance of police and Rangers and security arrangements at prisons.

The Rangers DG’s statement came after the apex court asked which power was stopping the police and Rangers from restoring law in the city.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry told the Sindh chief secretary that he had the support of the IB, ISI and MI and but criminal were still not being eliminated.

“When police stations are sold and SHOs are appointed after paying money, what work cane we expect,” the chief justice said.

He said the chief secretary was aware of the identity of extortionists, but would not inform the court.

The court attached a case pertaining to extraordinary protocol to former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, Qaim Ali Shah, Awais Muzaffar and Rehman Malik with the Karachi law and order case.

Former PM Pervez Ashraf had approved extraordinary perks and privileges for him and his cabinet members during the last days of his tenure prompting the chief justice to take suo motu notice.

Notices were also issued to aforesaid personalities along with the Sindh chief secretary, Rangers Sindh DG, Sindh inspector general of police and Election Commission Sindh secretary.

The hearing of the case was adjourned until today (Thursday).
