Hotel owner bailed in power theft case

The Lahore High Court on Frday granted bail to a local hotel owner involved in Rs 24.4 million electricity theft case, after he deposited half of the detection bill.

The court directed the accused to submit surety bonds of Rs 500,000 to avail the bail.

Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi granted bail to Ahmad Shujaur Rehman, owner of a multi-storey hotel in Gulberg, in response to a bail application filed by him.

The petitioner’s counsel had told the court that the Lahore Electricity Supply Company (LESCO) had charged a detection bill of Rs 24.4 million and the accused had deposited Rs 12.2 million as per the court’s directions on the last hearing for availing the bail. He pleaded that the court grant the bail to the accused. The LESCO counsel did not oppose the request.

The court was told that the review committee would decide the matter of the remaining amount of the detection bill.

Federal Investigation Agency and LESCO officials unveiled the electricity theft when they raided the accused’s hotel on July 23.

A case was registered against the accused under Section 39-A of the Electricity Act and Sections 36 and 37 of the Electronic Transactions Ordinance.
