Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Syed Munawar Hassan said on Sunday that a global conspiracy was at work in Egypt where innocent people associated with Ikhwanul Muslimoon were being crushed under the tanks.
Hassan was addressing a JI rally in the support of Ikhwanul Muslimoon and deposed Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi at D-Chowk.
The JI chief lauded the leadership of Turkey which rejected the interim leadership of Egypt and knocked at the door of the UN Security Council to raise the issue. He said the Egyptian generals were killing thousands of their innocent countrymen to appease Israel, US and some EU countries.
He said the government of President Morsi was elected for five years but it was deposed after just one year. He said the mandate of the people of Egypt had been hijacked.
Munawar said the so-called champions of human rights in the Arab world and the West had adopted dual standards and they were silent over the massacre. He reminded that al-Qaeda chief Aymen al-Zawahiri previously belonged to Ikhwanul Muslimoon but when he realised that peaceful transfer of power to Islamic movement was not possible, he joined al-Qaeda. The JI chief said crackdown against the Ikhwan would promote the views of al-Qaeda and other militant movements.
Munawar said the JI had reservations over the results of May 11 general elections. He said the “establishment” decided the game and went out of the way to support one party while awarding it 150 seats instead of 80. He said people came to know about the IJI reality after many years but the reality of these elections would come to the fore very soon.
“This game will not continue for long. If democracy is not allowed to take its roots then we know how to deliver our message in the reign of atrocities,” he said.
The JI chief also condemned punishments awarded to the JI leaders in Bangladesh and said these punishments were against the bilateral agreement. Munawar said Zulfikar Bhutto made an agreement with Sheikh Mujeeb after Bangladesh creation that both the countries would forget the past as enough damage had already been done.
Participants at the rally chanted slogans in favour of President Morsi. At one occasion, the JI chief’s speech was halted as his health condition worsened but he resumed his speech after some time.
Stringent security measures were taken on the occasion and thousands of people including women and children attended the rally.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi while addressing the rally said the whole Pakistani nation was concerned over the situation in Egypt.
He said any kind of ban on Ikhwanul Muslimoon would be counterproductive. He said the ban couldn’t kill the passion. Pakistan should play its role in the UN Security Council for solution of the issue, he suggested.
Qureshi said the burning of churches in Egypt was also worrisome and Islam does not allow such acts. The PTI leader said the Pakistani rulers should also learn a lesson from the situation in Egypt.
