The government has made it clear that no change has been made in the law relating to death penalty.

A spokesman of the Prime Minister House said on Sunday that no change had been made in the death penalty and execution laws. He said the president was on foreign tour and a meeting between the president and the prime minister was expected on his return.

He said the issue of execution would be discussed in that meeting and a decision would be taken accordingly.

The spokesman further clarified that President Asif Ali Zardari had written to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on August 15 regarding a consensus meeting for clemency to death-row prisoners and those arrested in various offenses.

The President’s House sources disclosed that President Asif Ali Zardari did not want to implement any death sentence during his remaining tenure as president, and wanted to leave the issue to the newly-appointed president.
