Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) Chairman Altaf Hussain on Saturday called upon his party workers and supporters to remain committed to the movement even if he was arrested by the British police in his alleged involvement in the Dr Imran Farooq murder and money laundering cases.
He said this while addressing his office bearers, workers and supporters at MQM’s zone offices in Mirpurkhas and Hyderabad in connection with the Aug 22 by-elections. Members of the national and provincial assemblies were also present at the occasion.
A statement from London Secretariat on Saturday quoted the MQM chief as saying that even if the British police arrested him, the party members and supporters must remain committed and determined. “Their leader, Altaf Hussain, is innocent and is not afraid of confinement or any other action,” he added.
Hussain said that although he had been physically away from Pakistan for the past 21 years, spiritually, he had always remained amongst his people from whom no power on Earth could distance him. He said that sometimes a leader struggling for the rights of the oppressed was imprisoned in his own city, thus being compelled to stay physically away from his people.
However, it is the irony of fate that sometimes one is not imprisoned but still decides to live a life away from everyone for the sake of his belief, cause and mission and because of the fact that he is not willing to go against his conscience, he added.
Hussain stressed that the MQM was not against any ethno-linguistic group or community and respected the rights of all. In the past, the MQM got a Sindhi-speaking elected to the parliament from the Urdu-speaking dominated Azizabad in Karachi and now a Baloch had been elected from the same region which demonstrated that his party was against no one, he added.
