City govt goes for head start in spreading road safety awareness

KARACHI – Students from class I to IV in the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) schools will be taught about road safety, emergency, disaster and rescue issues in their curriculum. A sub-committee has also been formed by the CDGK’s Transport and Communication Department (TCD) while the CDGK will be supported by the NED University faculty and the Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Traffic.
According to the minutes of a recently held meeting, the TCD executive district officer (EDO) told the participants that the Karachi DCO has emphasised upon the need of raising awareness among students regarding road safety, disaster, emergency, rescue and other lifesaving issues. The DCO has also asked the TCD sub-committee to make recommendations for inclusion of lessons on road safety and present-day emergencies among the students of CDGK-run schools while also suggesting ways and means for their implementation.
The TCD sub-committee comprises NED University’s Dr Mohammad Adnan, Road Safety Education (RSE) District Officer (DO) Aamir Hussain and RSE Additional DO Raisa Khan. Earlier, a subject committee, comprising TCD EDO Atique Baig, NED University Urban and Infrastructural Engineering Department Chairman Prof Dr Mir Shabbar Ali, Services General Administration Department DO Abid Hussain Zawawi, Education EDO Ibrahim Kumbher, SSP Police Traffic Zone-3 Ali Raza, DO Rasheed Jamal, and Road Safety DO Aamir Hussain, had been formed by the CDGK through notification number DO(C)/CDGK/2011/120 on January 25 for preparing the draft lessons for the school going children.
The project for including lessons and chapters in the curriculum was undertaken with the view of reducing the casualties of school-going children in traffic accidents in the city.
