District and Sessions Judge Syed Hamid Hussain Shah on Tuesday dismissed the bail application of former Punjab Assembly Member Rana Asif Mehmood and issued a warrant for his arrest.
The judge also issued a notice to his surety and adjourned the further hearing till August 29.
When the proceedings started, Mehmood’s counsel appeared before the court and submitted a report that his client had been suffering from a disease which affects digestion system, Alute Pancreatitis.
He said that Mehmood went abroad for his treatment and thus could not appear before the court. The petitioner’s counsel requested the court to grant him immunity in this regard so he could undergo better treatment for his disease.
After hearing the arguments of the petitioner’s counsel, the judge dismissed the bail application filed Rana Asif Mehmood and additionally, issued his arrest warrant for August 29.
The judge issued the notice to his surety. As per details, Mehmood was found guilty of possessing dual nationality. Mehmood himself admitted that he was a Canadian national but was not Canadian citizen.
Later, the Election Commission filed a suit against him and requested the court to punish him in accordance with the law as he had violated the 1976 Public Representation Act and was not capable of being a member of the provincial legislative assembly.
