Katy’s new single leaked three days early — and we are not complaining at all! The song is classic Katy (in a good way), an all-out pop song that sweeps you up in the emotions and takes you for an uplifting ride. It’s a clear descendent of “Teenage Dream” and “Firework.” But there’s also a sense in “Roar” that things have changed for Katy since she released her last album, Teenage Dream, in 2010. She’s since been married and divorced, and you can feel her persevering through that difficult breakup with the help of her music.
“I am a champion, and you’re gonna hear me roar,” Katy sings in the chorus. It’s an inspiring message, and a relatable one for anyone who’s felt knocked down by a bad split.
