The future of employees of the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) is in the doldrums after a board decision to hand over its assets to the provinces.

According to a PTDC official, there was uncertainty among the employees about their jobs after a meeting of the Board of Directors for transfer of its assets.

The meeting declared that the PTDC’s assets and properties stood transferred to the provinces as after devolution it was mandatory under the 18th Constitutional Amendment. An official said that a mechanism would be laid down for handing over properties and sorting out matters pertaining to employees.

He said the meeting decided to constitute a team to evaluate and verify the assets in all the provinces and take steps to safeguard the future of the PTDC employees.

“Employees working in various hotels in the four provinces would be accommodated at the same place, while fate of those working at the Center would be decided according to their domiciles,” he added.

The official said it was against the spirit of the 18th Amendment which stated that interests of the employees would be safeguarded before taking any decision. He hoped that the employees’ interests would be taken care of while making any decision.

Moreover, he informed that a report of a team constituted by the prime minister to investigate ‘illegal’ appointments made by the former managing director is yet to be made public and that the high-ups should wait for the enquiry report.
