Sugarcane, cotton crops and some localities were inundated when a 100-feet wide breach developed in Aab-e-Hayat Canal at Chak 5-P on Tuesday.
Canal water entered Chak 5-P, Basti Haji Akbar Ali Bhular, Basti Laran, Dewan Khoha and various other localities of Mauza Wahi.
Bahawalpur Canal Chief Engineer Malik Khurshiduz Zaman and member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) Chaudhry Muhammad Ijaz Shafi rushed to the spot and ordered the plugging of the breach.
The chief engineer said stern action would be taken against the officers responsible.
Meanwhile, people from the affected localities staged a protest demonstration against the canal department and demanded the authorities concerned to plug the breach and compensate their loss.
