The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Sindh police chief to submit a challan on the killing of a taxi driver by paramilitary Rangers force in Karachi within one week.

On July 18, the Supreme Court took a suo motu notice of the murder of the taxi driver.

The case was heard by a three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed.

Recalling the killings of Sarfaraz Shah and Ghulam Haider by the Rangers personnel, the chief justice said it was not the first time the Rangers officers had acted irresponsibly.

“If the Rangers have arms in their hands, they should use it according to the law,” the CJP said, adding, “The court will intervene if forces commit such acts.”

He questioned why an FIR had not been lodged by the Rangers director general.

A lawyer representing the Rangers told the SC that four Rangers personnel had been handed over to the police for investigation.

The court directed the Sindh IG to submit a challan in the killing within a week and adjourned the hearing until July 26.
